This project, developed by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and the Vietnam Energy Institute, marks a crucial step towards Vietnam’s target of developing 300MW of energy storage by 2030, as outlined in the latest Eighth Power Development Plan (PDP 8). The project will provide four medium speed, four stroke, heavy fuel oil (HFO) driven generators with a capacity of 15 MW each; a power station building; two 1000 cubic metre tanks for the storage of HFO; and one 132 Kv substation for connection of the power plant to the existing electricity grid belonging to the Central Electricity Board (CEB), the State owned electricity utility in Mauritius. Scheduled for completion in the second half of 2025, the facility, located in Laudat, a valley surrounding the capital, will harness the country’s volcanic potential, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and provide clean and stable energy to approximately 23,000 homes, confirmed the Dominica Geothermal Development Company, a public-private partnership carrying out the project.
