The simplest protection against reverse battery protection is a diode in series with the battery, as seen in Figure 1. Figure 1. Diode in Series With Battery In Figure 1, the diode becomes forward biased and the load’s normal operating current flows through the diode.
Figure 6 shows the more severe case of the charger up and running when the reverse battery hot plug occurs. The reverse connection pulls the charger side voltage down until the detection and protection circuits disengage it, allowing the charger to return safely to its constant-voltage level.
The negative voltage is dropped across the R resistor rather than the R DSG GS resistor. With the negative voltage on PACK+, the discharge FET sees the sum of the battery and charger voltages and must be specified with a suitable V DS voltage. The reversed charger carries the sum of the current from the DSG and PACK pin nodes.
To provide these electronic safeguards, manufacturers typically chose either a diode or transistor for reverse battery protection. The simplest protection against reverse battery protection is a diode in series with the battery, as seen in Figure 1. Figure 1. Diode in Series With Battery
If the battery got inserted in a reverse polarity, the P-MOS would close, protecting the IC. And the IC would not be powered, the FET1 and FET2 would remain closed, protecting the connected circuit and the charger. And as almost no current would flow through the P-MOS transistors, the efficiency would be unaffected.
When a reversed charger is connected to an enabled circuit, after the protection event the charger recovers and a negative voltage develops on PACK+. The voltage waveform will depend on the charger characteristic. Figure 9 shows an example of a reverse voltage applied after DSG switching. Figure 9. Discharge Disable With Reverse Voltage
