Georgia Power’s 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) filed with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) anticipates approximately 8,200 megawatts (MW) of electrical load growth by 2030 – an increase of more than 2,200 MW compared to projections in its 2023 IRP update, which called for the construction of a swath of new battery energy storage systems (BESS) to help answer the call of data centers and mass electrification. In that filing, Georgia Power signaled its intention to solicit bids for more storage- another 500 MW- in the near future. Battery energy storage projects are popping up all over the U.S., which added nearly 4 GW of storage capacity in the second quarter of this year alone, according to a recent report.
Georgia Power breaks ground at the McGrau Ford Battery Facility in Cherokee County on April 4, 2025. This 530-megawatt battery energy storage system will consist of two phases, approved in the 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and 2023 IRP Update. Courtesy: Georgia Power.
Earlier this month, Georgia Power Company submitted its 2023 Integrated Resource Plan Update (2023 IRP Update) to the Georgia Public Service Commission, which includes an Application for Certification for four battery energy storage systems totaling 500 MW.
Georgia Power included attachments with information and data on each of the proposed projects, but since they contained “sensitive terms and conditions” and cost information, they were nearly entirely redacted from public disclosure- deemed “trade secrets.” Here’s what we do know about those projects:
In February 2024, Georgia Power installed its first grid-connected BESS, the Mossy Branch Energy Facility, a 65 MW system on a couple of acres of rural countryside in Talbot County, north of Columbus, GA. It was approved as part of Georgia Power’s 2019 IRP.
Georgia Power’s fleet of hydroelectric generating units is another source of emission-free energy, with some units serving the state of Georgia for more than 100 years.

The project adopted Elecod 500kW/1075kWh container BESS, the system configured 4 units of Monet-125kW PCS, and integrates battery, fire protection, refrigeration, isolation transformer, dynamic environment monitoring and energy management, friendly grid adaptability, accepts grid dispatching, carries out active and reactive power compensation, supports peak shaving and valley filling, demand-side response, assists new energy grid integration and other applications. Recently, Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and a consortium comprising Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities Energy Platform formally signed an agreement to jointly develop solar power projects with a total installed capacity of 1.2GW, coupled with the construction of a 720MWh battery energy storage system. On July 5, 2025, a joint venture composed of China Energy Construction China Power Engineering International, East China Electric Power Design Institute and Hunan Thermal Power Construction Co., Ltd. officially signed an early working agreement with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) in Oman for the early work of the Ibri 3 photovoltaic energy storage power station project in Oman, marking the official entry of this major new energy project into the performance stage.
